Genetics and role of the HLA system in immune mediated diseases

Several genetic studies showed how HLA system is involved in the onset of immune-mediated diseases. Among the several MHC complex genes, those directly related to immune mediated diseases are DQA1, DQB1 and DRB1 II class HLA genes; specific alleles have been associated with different diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS), type 1 diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, ulcerative rectocolitis (UC), Crohn’s disease (CD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), celiac disease (CH). These associations have also been found in patients with allergies and inflammatory bowel disorder.
